Unveiling the Journey to Self-Confidence: Navigating Cultural Challenges and Personal Growth
About #SelfConfidence
Based on my observations, I have noticed that there is a general lack of self-confidence among Taiwanese girls. Speaking from personal experience, I used to struggle with a lack of confidence, particularly concerning my appearance. This stemmed largely from a birthmark on the left side of my face, which is covered in black pigment. During my childhood, I faced frequent teasing and was often labelled as "dirty-looking." Consequently, I developed a significant lack of confidence in both my appearance and abilities.
Upon relocating to another country, I came to acknowledge the potential role of cultural factors in this matter. Specifically, I believe that Taiwanese education tends to foster a highly competitive environment. Parents often resort to comparisons to motivate their children, inadvertently contributing to the development of self-doubt. Common phrases that resonated during my childhood include:
"Why did you perform worse than others?"
"Why can't you outperform others?"
"Why can't you achieve what others have?"
"Why can't you do what others can?"
Though seemingly inconsequential at the time, such words can leave a lasting impact, leading to a pervasive lack of self-confidence among individuals.
However, does self-confidence solely rely on external validation? I do not believe there is a definitive answer to this question, but from my perspective
self-confidence can be cultivated and nurtured from within
I propose that the initial step toward building self-confidence involves introspection and identifying the root causes of one's lack of confidence, while considering the potential influence of those around you. Exploring these reasons will unveil the paths to bolstering one's confidence and fostering self-awareness.
Throughout this journey of self-discovery, individuals can develop a deeper understanding of themselves and discern their personal needs. These needs encompass self-requirements, aspirations for self-growth, and the establishment of self-goals.
By engaging in this process, one can enhance self-awareness and foster self-assurance. These were the phenomena I observed during my year of study in England. I hope this serves as a guiding light for those striving to cultivate confidence and beauty through the pursuit of self-confidence. Let's grow together.
